Sonny John Moore, professionally known as Skrillex, was born on January 15, 1988 in Los Angeles, California. He moved to San Francisco at the age of 2 and attended a boarding school in Las Vegas when he was 9 before moving back to California to attend a private academy of arts. As a result of being bullied, he was home-schooled from the age of 14 and later found out that he was adopted in 2004. Moore frequented raves and punk gigs as a teenager in LA.

Skrillex started his music career in 2004 in the rock band From First To Last after he asked frontman Matt Good if he could play guitar on their debut album. However, after producers heard Moore’s vocals, he was made lead singer along with Good on guitar. He released two albums with the band: Dear Diary, My Teen Angst Has a Body Count and Heroine before leaving to pursue a solo career in 2007.

During his period in the band, he had vocal complications which were later taken care of through surgery. Skrillex later released three demos on Myspace and made others available on his tour with Team Sleep. In 2008, he went on to tour with The Rocket Summer, The Matches, All Time Low, and Forever the Sickest Kids.

In 2009, Moore released his first EP titled Gypsyhook and later appeared at Bamboozle as part of the band, Sonny and the Blood Monkeys. Up until this point, he had adopted the alias Twipz until he released his debut EP My Name is Skrillex under his current DJ name in 2010. He featured on Bring Me The Horizon’s third LP and signed onto Deadmau5’s label on which he released his second EP Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites.

In 2011, Skrillex collaborated with Korn on their song “Get Up” and performed with them at Coachella that year. He also released his third EP More Monsters and Sprites and launched his record label OWSLA. In addition, he collaborated with Knife Party and Kaskade that year. In November, Moore announced that he was intending to release his album Voltage but it never came to fruition. He went on to release his Bangarang EP instead.

In 2012, he became involved in a project called Dog Blood with Boys Noize and they release an EP together titled Next Order/Middle Finger. He also released a limited edition triple vinyl box set and composed the track “Bug Hunt” for the animated movie “Wreck-It Ralph.” Skrillex has won a total of six Grammy awards thus far including Best Dance/Electronica Album for Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites and Best Dance Recording for Bangarang.

In February 2012, it was reported that Skrillex was dating singer Ellie Goulding, who featured as a vocalist for his track “Summit” on the Bangarang EP. In October of that year, the couple split up, citing complications making their long distance relationship work.
