The past weekend has been very sorrowful for Christina Grimmie fans and people all over the world.
Selena Gomez fought back tears and took a moment to remember Christina Grimmie, the 22-year-old singer and Voice finalist who was fatally shot on June 10. Gomez was performing a concert in Miami, although she almost wasn’t going to through with it.
“One thing about Christina… is that she holds her faith so closely to her. I think it’s not about religion, and it’s not about good deeds. I think she just had faith, and I don’t really understand how this really happened,” she said to the audience.
She then sang two songs in honor of Christina, Hillsong Worship‘s “Transfiguration” and “Nobody” by Revival. Toward the end, Selena got overwhelmed with emotion and couldn’t finish, saying “sorry” to the audience.
The singer also canceled her meet-and-greet later in the evening, in honor of Grimmie’s passing.
Before the late Voice alum competed on the show’s sixth season, Gomez’ stepfather was her manager. Brian Teefy had discovered Christina’s amazing talent on YouTube, singing acoustic covers accompanied by her piano. She told Seventeen in 2011, “So then my brother texted me in the middle of school, like, ‘I really think Selena Gomez’s stepdad is trying to get a hold of you.’ I didn’t believe it; I had heard too many stories.”
