Deadmau5, real name Joel Zimmerman, was born on January 5, 1981 and raised in Niagara Falls, Canada. He has become one of the most sought-after artists in the EDM scene in recent times. He is well known for his entertaining live performances, often performing wearing his signature mouse head. Zimmerman’s DJ name originates from an event in which a mouse crawled into his computer and died. He posted about the incident on an internet forum, and the members began referring to him as TheDeadMouseGuy. ‘Dead Mouse’ was too long for an IRC username, so he shortened it to “deadmau5” and the moniker stuck.
He began his career as a co-producer of the Niagara Falls radio show “The Party Revolution” (101.1 The Planet). After being exposed to different facets of the electronic music scene, Zimmerman moved onto collaborate with many artists and record labels around the world. He garnered buzz on the indie dance retail site Beatport with the instrumentals “Not Exactly” and “Faxing Berlin,” earning him inclusion on DJ playlists and compilation albums.
In 2005, deadmau5 released his debut album Get Scraped, which boasted an array of genres and was different from his old sound. The LP Vexillology preceded in 2006. His third album, and first mainstream LP, was Random Album Title in 2008, which leaned towards a progressive house sound and featured many hit songs such as “Arguru,” “Not Exactly,” and “I Remember” with Kaskade. For Lack of a Better Name arrived in 2009, bringing more of a tech house style. Deadmau5 released his next album, 4×4=12, in 2010 and featured two dubstep songs. The next LP, > album title goes here <, arrived in 2012 and shows similarities to his debut album. His latest musical project was while(1<2), which was released in 2014.
Zimmerman has worked with a number of underground and mainstream artists including Melleny, Melody, Rob Swire of Pendulum, Skrillex, Tiësto, Steve Duda, Orgy, MC Flipside, and Kaskade. He has also collaborated with top names such as Glenn Morrison, Wolfgang Gartner, and Chris Lake.
Deadmau5 has been nominated for multiple Grammy Awards, and even performed on the 2012 award telecast with the Foo Fighters. He has also won Canada’s Juno Award for Dance Recording of the Year for four consecutive years (2008-2011). In addition, he was nominated for the Juno Award for Artist of the year in 2012 and 2013.
